2001-12-06 New digital On Air consoles for all stations of German AMS network

After 10 years of analogue operation all 7 radio stations of Westfalian network AMS receive complete refurbishment of their studios. T+M won the system integration contract and installed DHD digital technology.

Thum+Mahr was contracted for replacing all on air mixing consoles and the central control rooms of the local radio network AMS. A total of seven station had to be switched over to DHD technology. A special challenge was the integration of a complex remote controlled cross-fade functionality as part of the DHD package. This was formerly done in analog and performed by 3rd party VCA outboard equipment.

The functionality is part of a general requirement of the NRW network. AMS is a subnetwork of the parent organisation. Complex switching between day-parts being delivered from different programme sources the new software functionality had to become part of the DHD package. The final solution advanced to another fine example of the flexibility of software control being provided by the DHD system. AMS was finally redeemed to use the limited functions of an external box.

All consoles are of series 3200D. Special interest was put in the service friendliness of the DHD components. Hot fix design for all components was an important issue since technical staff of the network is reduced to a minimum. The audio workstations of the journalists have been updated with Yellowtec's Intellimix desktop mixers. The Intelli's are interconnected with the DHD routers and get access to 3rd party sources without additional xy-controllers. Voice processing is done through Yellowtec VIP/d units.
