... with Momentum Media for designing first class signal processing
Sound processing is a partnership issue for us. In this field we have formed a team with Momentum Media GmbH. Behind this business are two talented people, Dipl.Eng. Stefan Scheurer and Patrick Lynen: Both are well known in the business through successful sound upgrade projects: Their references in German broadcasting authorities rank amongst the best. For the usual discretionary reasons, we are not able to publish actual names here, but we would be delighted to introduce you to these contacts at your request.
Transmission path processing has a clearly defined role
Some time has passed since professional sound processing was confined purely to musical tonality. Now it embraces everything from unique sound quality developments in microphones to the telephone installation, and from participation in the choice and set-up of equipment, through to Dayparting and Briefing of the Crew.
Sound processing and hearing psychology have become a specialist area, and it is rare to find a broadcast consulting company able to offer comprehensive expertise across the whole breadth of this subject. However, proper advice and management of the entire audio chain, from microphone input to the FM multiplexer, cannot be overlooked in the need to ensure that uniform loudness is perceived by the listener. And this is exactly where the challenge lies: in the cumulative effects of problems in a complex transmission path.
Transmission path processing takes the listening context into account. Whilst it can be shown that a particularly aggressive sound achieves better ratings in the short term, it also results in psychological auditory fatigue, better known as listening fatigue. This is an established approach during the average 15-20 minute morning listening slot. From 9 am in the morning, the ear goes through an intensive analysis of its accuracy. After work, listeners prefer a softer and more relaxed sound. In 2003, loudness is no longer achieved by brutal compression including the unpleasant artefacts which are often present, but with new add-in equipment inserted downstream of the initial sound processing. This is how the perception of loudness in programmes is constantly and individually matched to the respective programme source type (news, voice, telephone, very loud advertising, etc.).

Even though there may be differences in the processing between the various manufacturers, good Sound processing is not an exclusive domain of the industry…
